Well it comes that I don't see things quite that way but you could make such ideas on many other worlds...

Forgotten: you have a nice prestige class in the midst of a world of chosens and epics.

DSun: you have a broken bone sword inside a tower of an inmmortal sorcerer of unimaginable power.

Ravenloft: you have fear in the midst of pure evil.

...

enough already! (By the way I like most of those above ok).

You must know what kind of game yo and your pcs are afetr when trying to push something on them, if they are ready for it they won't feel under or useless.
