Drutha Keldret, Hobgoblin Fighter

Night
Round 0

Drutha clutched at her glaive tightly as the ancient hobgoblin emerged from the shadows. She sneered in contempt at the elderly hobgoblin. Such a one should have killed himself long ago rather than continue to drain the tribe’s resources. But he did not sound so frail. Perhaps he was a powerful spellcaster, then, and not so useless as he appeared. She lowered her weapon to listen to his confusing words.

***

It took several days to reach the place she was told was appointed for the meeting of the various peoples. Drutha adjusted her mismatched chain armor as she crept through the forest, seeing the firelight ahead. She heard voices. Peering around a tree, she saw one of the snake people, an orc, a goblin, and a bugbear. She was familiar with goblins and bugbears. They frequently allied with the hobgoblin tribes, and her tribe had several as slaves or members. They were lesser creatures, of course, as were the orcs and the yuan-ti, though at least the yuan-ti were civilized.

Satisfied there was little danger just yet, Drutha stepped out from behind the tree, planting the butt of her glaive in the grass, pushing the war mask up to expose her face as she studied each in turn, judging the threat they posed and the best way to take each out, should the need arise.

“Drutha Keldret of the Bloody Hands has arrived,” she announced.

Fire. Candle. No take candle.

Moon Moon had only recently encountered his first non-kobold humanoids. These creatures were strange, ugly, and often too big. He focused his mind, or tried to, as he peered into the crowd gathering at the flame. He considered running away right now, but something seemed to kick him in the back launching him forward towards the campfire.

A small scaly creature in leather armor with a wooden shield and crude scimitar lands face in the dirt before the flaming debris. "Gaaahh!"

Terrified that he was now visible to everyone and prone, Moon Moon quickly picked himself up onto all fours and started glaring angrily at the group from left to right. He started to growl, then started moving around the group from left to right sniffing the air around them and the fire.

Once he has circled back to his original position, satisfied, he yelps and points a finger at himself.

"Moon Moon!"

The kobold raises his weapon and shield, "Great kobold champion! Have biggest and best candle! You no take candle!"

Moon Moon decides to start casting control flames and pull little bits of the fire out to play with.

Karok sneered and let a low growl of disgust escape from the back of his throat. He didn't even know Kobolds had enough sense to develop a society, much less be able to send emissaries. The Hobgoblin may pose a problem. She looked strong. But she wore metal armor, and Karok had learned long ago that those who wear metal armor are more susceptible to his particular form of magic. An advantage. And the bugbear may post a challenge as well.

He didn't even bother studying the Kobold or Goblin.

Ripnek tried to ignore the things in the fire, but when the kobold came tumbling into the clearing, he instinctively looked away from Karok the orc. A dismissive growl escapes his mouth until he notices the strong hobgoblin. Every bugbear knows that when goblinoids get together, hobgoblins lead. There is no other way.

With a nod, Ripnek acknowledges Drutha.

Nert watched as first a bugbear then a Hobgoblin arrived. Great more Bigs, he thought. He watched them flex their metaphorical muscles at each other in a display of leadership and bravado. Nert Smiled to himself, so predictable but with him being the only small he would be doing a lot of toadying to ensure they arrived at the right conclusions.

Just as he completed that thought a Kobold landed face first in the dirt then scurried over, sniffing everyone. Nert resisted the urge to lash out at him, he would need a Small ally in this group. Moon Moon started making the fire dance and dart about - Booyagh! maybe too dangerous to be an ally.

Looking at the group, the Orc and Kobold both using booyagh, and a female hobgoblin fighter, all outcasts, perhaps their respective Boss's were using the unwanted tribe members to deal with an unwanted task too.

With that he squeaked out, "So what now Boss?" Careful not to aim the honorific at any one in particular.

Karok glanced at the goblin, "Now we wait."

He saw the Kobald playing with the fire. Hmm. Another who can manipulate the elements. Perhaps he had been wrong to dismiss this one.

Saashala went to the fire and held out her hands to warm them. She watched the plays between the others and thought to herself about how best to pull those strings. Physical domination was unlikely to work. She was no malison or abomination, able to ruthlessly overpower any but the strongest foe. Where they ruled through main force, she would have to rule by guile.

The warmth was a comfort at least, and it gave her a moment to contemplate the items burning. It was an...unsubtle, but clearly appropriate display. Saashala had studied other beings long enough to recognize hate when she saw it, and there was no better metaphor than this bonfire.

"Is that everyone?" she asked, looking up and directing her question into the inky blackness outside the radius of the firelight. "Are we ready to begin?"

"Actually, Boss over here," comes a old and gravelly voice from the darkness at the edge of the clearing.

A short, cloaked figure edges in to sight. It looks thin and maybe bony under the robe, and the darkness inside the cowl is completely inscrutable. It speaks again, and you think maybe it's a "she."

"Come on then, gather around, and let's go over your options." She taps a walking stick on the dirt at her feet impatiently.
