In my last campaign the PCs were orphans from an orc raid. They had been taken in by a local farmer and raised together. So it was a sort of foster home environment. Once they hit their late teens they decided it was time to kick the farm dirt off of their shoes...

A few campaigns ago the DM's wife and I played a pair of adventurers who were brother and sister of a very minor noble family. A minor character background item of a disgraced grandfather became a major part of our game as these two PCs attempted to find out just what exactly happened in that past event. The brother was goal oriented to rebuild the family fortunes while is sister was more concerned with the family name. It worked well.
