I would reccommend you take a look at Black Company, by Green Ronin. There's also Blue Rose, but I think that might be a bit too....happy, I guess, for you.

I like Kalamar, but I don't love it. Maybe it appeals mostly to women? And after comparing midnight to Black Company, I sold all my midnight stuff and bought BC.

I like Black Company, but it's extremely gritty and not really "high fantasy", and the magic system is a bit complicated.

Give 3rd edition Dragonlance a try. I've been very pleased with it.
