Actually, I saw a duplicate of a shamanistic mongol "pole" (long thing coming out of ground)in a museam recently, with various animal engravings. So there may be something to the root of this, but Gengis Khan as nature lover seems a little exagerated

Why? nature full of spirits is a thing of much destructive (and creative) power, awe and terror, pretty much all the qualities required by a would be (and eventually very successful) conquerer.
Plus when you actually look at the other things Genghis Khan did - creating a system of laws, introducing literacy to the Mongol Empire, creating his Pony express and consorting with Christians, Bhuddist and Shaman advisors it shows him to be a very cosmopolitan ruler. Being a nature lover on top of that isn't so far fetched:D
