One of my favorite small books is "Eyewitness to History" a collection of eyewitness acoounts of everythign from dining with the Kublai Khan to the civil war. Todays thread is short on links, but long on reading. All letters, accounts and missives of real people who were there.

Andrew Boorde travelled Eurpoe int he early 16th century and wrote about what he saw- http://www.saradouglass.com/primdocs/boorde.html

Francesco Petrarch wrote lots of letters, many of them to famous people in history who were long dead..- http://www.fordham.edu/halsall/source/petrarch1.html

sidonius has a lot to say form the fifth century. he was watching Gaul turn into a state of its own- http://www.fordham.edu/halsall/source/sidonius1.html

Examples of good letter writing from the 4th to 17th centuries. All openings and closings. Flowery language is abundant here, good for letters form royalty or impressing a loved one :)- http://www.dragonbear.com/letters.html

Letters form Rocky moiuntian fur traders in the early 1800's- http://www.xmission.com/~drudy/mtman/mmarch.html

eyewitness art accounts of early Africans in america (can be graphic)- http://www.pbs.org/wgbh/aia/rb_index_hd.html

a nice article on why letters and diaries are such good resources- http://historymatters.gmu.edu/mse/letters/whatkind.html
