I got dice older than you.
Here is a good interview with the man responsible for the quote in my .sig.

There is some pretty good discussion of Errol Flynn "parry-parry, whack-whack" style of fighting, and the reality of it all.

Interesting, but I didn't think that the style was necessarily supposed to be accurate. :) Do his comments (re Flynn) refer to other films than The Adventures of Robin Hood? It's my impression that most of his swashbucklers were set in the 17th century or later, using rapiers and other fencing weapons.

(edit: The Sea Hawk was 16th century, I guess. But there were rapiers in use then, I believe.)

Well, he specifically mentioned Ivanhoe. I don't think they were using rapiers then.

And of course, I don't think for a second that 40s/50s Hollywood gave a spit about historical accuracy, so no argument there. However, most people see those movies and assume they are historically correct (my own assumption, how ironic :p ).

It doesn't really matter, I guess, unless you happen to care about things like that. I'm betting several people on this board do.

There were LOTS of Errol Flynn swashbuckler movies. Two more properly in the genre were Captain Blood (set in the 16th century, with full pirate decor) and The Adventures of Don Juan (not really historically based at all). Of course, all such films had not intention of being historical and shoudln't be held to such a standard.
