D&D 5E Monsters with Multiattack

If a creature has Multiattack, how do you handle special attack actions?

For example, a dragon has Multiattack - two claws and a bite and then has their breath weapon. If the dragon uses their breath weapon does that use up the Multiattack action?

It's whatever you decide to do with your ACTION.

A dragon can do it's Claw-Claw- Bite (or whatever it is) as it's action OR Breath. Breathing is an action all on its own.

Right. Multiattack is an action. Using breath weapon is also an action. You only get one action per turn unless an ability says otherwise.

Generally speaking, Multiattack tells you what it allows. Anything outside of that ('2 claws and 1 bite', for instance) is no longer actually a multiattack.

So the Ghoul now has to choose whether it bites or makes one claw attack each round? Since it doesn't have multiattack like, say, the Nothic does?

Aww. Now any party of less than 4th level won't run in abject fear of a single ghoul (if they were smart, anyway) like in the good ol' days.

:p
