Stone shape and the beholder
I've told this story before on the boards, but one more time won't hurt...
My 5th level druid (1st ed.) got seperated from the rest of the party (which was around 9-10th level) by being washed downstream. Came into a large lake in a cavern, saw a drow and a beholder talking on the shore. Stealthily swam to the cavern wall, cast stoneshape, and "dug away" a small vein creating a gigantic pyramid within the ceiling attached by only the thinnest of connections.
Gravity worked, the drow managed to dive out of the way, but the beholder got squished like a bug. I threw heat metal on the drow's armor, clambered out of the water and started smacking away, and got really lucky - killed the drow.
