Indeed, that's probably the best solution suggested by the book. I felt I needed to clarify the problem because the majority of posters insist on making checks for everyone.

By the way, you mean "Cooperation" (PH p. 62), which is for skills. "Aid Another" is specific to combat (PH p. 135).

I don't see what people's problems are with this mechanic. The more spotters or the more hiders (in a sneaking, rather than an ambushing, situation) there are, the easier it is for the hiders to be seen. This isn't just a game mechanic, it's real life. In that equation of yours, of course it will be easy for 4 spotters to see any of 4 hiders...but it will be significantly harder for 1 spotter to see 1 hider. This is why guards don't work alone, and why thieves do work alone (or in very very small groups). Also, if people don't use the terrain/surroundings/whatever to their advantage, of course they're going to be spotted.

I really don't see any problem....
