[Mutant Future] Welcome to Slimy Lake!

As Deathvine's standard travelling place (in the party order) is 20 yards above the group and 10 yards in front, for a better view of what's coming up. Its move will be readying the scyth to swoop down for a diving attack from above when the spider is close enough.

OOC - As a plant, Deathvine doesn't sleep. Its more like a shark, always moving and hunting for food. So the whole stopping in one place for several hours isn't part of its MO, but its accomodating in its need for company.

"Spider legs good, yup!" Of course, in the days the group has traveled together Grub has proclaimed everything even remotely edible as 'good' so this doesn't really mean much.

He tightens his grip on his staff and quickly brushes back the enveloping hood that he wears to keep the sun off his pale skin. His head swings back and forth as he looks to either side and then he cranes his head around to look behind them, as if he is expecting something else to pop up and attack them from another direction. He twitches like he is about to turn tail and run at any minute but he takes his cues from his new friends and stands firm for the moment.

He fumbles around in the folds of his robe a brief moment and withdraws a sling, loads it with a stone and begins to whirl it around. At just the right moment he lets fly at the spider...

Clyde eyed the spider with all the caution a creature of that size was due. Without making any sudden movement he reached for his bow, and slowly circling out and away from giant arachnid Clyde nocked an arrow, ready to shoot as soon as it became evident that a fight was going to take place.

Slade calmly unslung his crossbow. He leveled the weapon, squinting his one good eye as he gauged the distance and let his quarrel fly.

[sblock=OOC:] attack; damage (1d20+2=18, 1d8=7)
I believe that hit AC 1 for 7 damage.
Actually hit AC 0 as 70 yards is short range for a crossbow outside.

The spider, a giant tarantula, continues hissing, which provokes a fearful braying response from Deathvine's donkey.

As the party readies it weapons on the ground, the spider skitters toward the group then breaks toward the north in a flanking movement. Deathvine glides into position, then swoops down in a steep dive, but her weapon misses the spider by a hair's breadth.

Sixty yards....Slade fires a bolt and strikes the spider, slowing its progress a bit. (8 points of damage)

Fifty yards.. the spider closes the gap, still heading north as Clyde lets loose an arrow that the spider deftly dodges.

Forty yards..Grub unloosens a sling bullet but misses the target as well.

At the same time, Alecto releases a burst of electrical energy. A bluish white arc of energy crackles into the air and fills the space between her body and the spider. The discharge hits directly in the center of the monster's torso. The spider's many legs buckle and it crumples dead into the dust, its body smoldering. (9 points of damage).

From her vantage point, Deathvine can see what appears to be a "lid" of vegetation covering a large hole concealed amongst the grass at the approximate spot of the spiders appearance.

"Woo hoo!" cheers Grub. He does something that may pass as a victory dance then stuffs his sling back into the folds of his robe.

Deathvine circles low over the "door", waving over the others. "Mmm some roasted spider will be a nice change from that horrid stuff that those people sold in that large settlement we had to leave. I think it came out of this door shaped clump of grass over here." It won't touch down until the others have closed on the door.

OOC - does Deathvine notice any other of these "doors" in the grass, in the immediate vicinity?

Circling, Deathvine can see no other spider doors in the vicinity. The terrain is bland here; dusty plain with scrubgrass, slowly giving away to grassland. There are precious few places on could conceal oneself; no trees or large plants to speak of, though there are some near the horizon.

Now knowing what to look for, the mutant plant can see nothing that indicates danger.

Grub runs over to the clump of grass indicated by Deathvine. "Here? Here?" he calls. Upon receiving affirmation Grub will begin poking around the edges with his staff in an attempt to find the edge and pry up the trapdoor lid.
