Personally, if you made a slightly more combative version of the bard without the spells, I think that would be the most fitting for the Dwarves. Dwarven war chants, anyone? [And also the numerous Crafting skills, as well]

However, without having a melee 'bard', I guess I'll simply say Fighter. I'm not going to vote Fighter though because I dislike voting for it only because of, what I feel, through the lack of a better option.

After reading that comprehensive list of classes I came to two conclusions:

1) I have never heard of 30 % of those classes.

2) That being said, I still think Fighter is the best choice. I almost picked artificer but I'm going to save that for gnomes when that poll goes up. It is a better fit for them IMO

The Emperor of Mogs made a good point that a favoured class that isn't good for multi-classing somewhat defeats the purpose and weakens the race.

Yep.

Tolkien Halfling = Commoner and proud of it.
Dwarf = Expert
Elf = Aristocrat
Half orc = Warrior

Favored class is a lame mechanic which takes away much more than it adds. It needlessly imposes a penalty to building a character that deviates from stereotypes, which is exactly what PC's tend to do. And note that the only beings in the universe really affected by favored classes are players, since they're the only ones who have to suffer the ongoing burden of a 20% XP penalty.

IMO, DM's focusing their energies on picking new favored classes for races would do just as well to dump it altogether (or just using the human's FC rule of "any" for all characters).

Again, noting that PC's are the only ones genuinely affected by favored classes, it seems odd to apply favored class explicitly to NPC classes.

So, anybody get adept?

I find favored classes annoying and typically disregard them if a player asks me to. I think it was a neat idea, but in today's game of spontenaity and homebrew design it should be done away with.

But I voted fighter anyway just because it was a poll.

Might I make a few suggestions if this is going to turn into a series? For most of the other races I could see multiple choices working. So, I would suggest allowing voters to pick up to three. I realize you can't have a poll that limits the number of choices besides one, but still - it is what it is.

Second, could you post the sources where the classes come from? A few of them (Non-complete, non-XPH, non-UA, and non-Core) I didn't know where they came from. Thanks!

Actually, the elves would get adept, and the humans aristocrats. Here's why I htink that:

Elves were, for all purposes, magical beings. They crafted a variety of magic stuff for the Fellowship, were better healers due to their magic (curing Frodo of the wraiths wound), and were simply magic in nature; heck they were bacially (though not completely, even the pure bloods) immortal.

Humans were actually not the people ou were supposed to be really sympathising with in LotR; the hobbits were supposed to represent the english and thus be more familiar and more easily empathised with. While the humans and hobbits goals were indeed, one and the same (ridding middle-earth of Sauron), the humans were to seem a little more alien to the reader, whereas the hobbits were more like, well, humans. And the humans were all important people, whereas the hobbits were not.

Otherwise, Frank has a really interesting idea :)

As for the knight class, while I really think that it fits the dwaves thematically, it doesn't adhere to their stats.

Now, if WotC would smarten up and give those dwarves the -2 Dex they deserve, in lieu of the -2 Cha, then we'd be cooking with gas :D

Oh, and the Knight class might make a sensable choice ;)

Naturally, I chose fighter, but I have also played the following classes for my dwarves...

Wizard
Cleric
Warlock
Monk (a great class, btw)
Rogue

All were fun to play. Dwarves are cool.
