You might think about starting out with 2 levels of barbarian before switching to Rogue to get shield proficiency, Reckless Attack, Danger Sense, and a lot of hp for your melee rogue. You could sword and board with a short sword or rapier, trigger Sneak Attack at will with Reckless Attack, and use Cunning Action to Disengage and minimize the opportunity for enemies to hit you back with advantage. If you take expertise in Athletics and get advantage on strength checks while raging you'll get to push, knock down, or grapple anyone you want. Thug life!
