Night vision

I was looking all over for the rules for this, but I couln't find anything clear and simple.

Low-light vision gives you the ability to see twice as far in moonlight, starlight or other low-light conditions as "normal". But what is the normal distance of vision for, say, moonlight. There are spot modifyers for moonlight, but no distance set anywhere I could find.

Maybe I'm blind.

DMG, p. 79, last paragraph under "Low-Light Vision":

Characters with low-light vision can see outdoors on a moonlit night as well as they can see during the day.

What your looking for is in the DMG under encounter distance. This will matter on your terrian you are in. To determine how far you can see your target.

But how far can a character see in moonlight without lowlight vision. Say in an unobstructed plain?

I believe I remember seeing that there was no hard limit on night vision, just steeper spot check penalties. So low-light vision would restore spot checks to the normal distance penalties. I think it was a clarification and not in a printed book.

IIRC there is no written rule for it.
