Notes on the Aether (Rae judging)

Seeing that it's the easiest to remove, Tommy slips the bag out first. Instantly, the rock's growth halts. The 'wax columns' are a bit tougher to remove, but with a little effort they pop out. They are normal wax candles, wick and all. Rapture kneels down to help, and as each candle is removed from the device, the rock shrinks, until finally just the disk and a few thin metal supports remain.

Back at the fireplace, the tongues of flame have become a full-fledged fire, and you can even make out the vague shape of a small humanoid rising up out of the ashes.

18 seconds have passed, it is now 12:19:48 PM.

Tommy backs nervously away from the fireplace, loads his crossbow, and readies it to fire when the elemental pops out.

ooc: that's more than one round's worth of actions; disregard the last if there isn't time.

"Not working over here," says Keldar. "There's no time to look for another device. It might not even be on this floor. Stand ready, stand ready..." Keldar's grip tightens on his morning star and dagger.[sblock=OOC]If we get a surprise round, then Keldar will strike with the morning star (+2, 1d8+2) and 5' step away to give others space. Given a full-round attack, he'll switch to 2WF, with the star declared to be in his offhand, for a marginally better chance of not missing entirely, (+0/+0, 1d8+1/1d4+2)[/sblock]

Conuld Tommy backs away, loads his crossbow, and aims it at the figure forming in the fireplace.

Suddenly the fire poofs and a small fire elemental steps out of the fireplace, leaving behind nothing but cold, gray ash. The elemental's appearance was no surprise to anyone, and everybody bursts into action at once.

Keldar's morningstar strike is terribly mighty, but the force behind it makes it clumsier (10), and the fire elemental easily slips around it.

Tommy's bolt flies astray (6), barely missing Keldar and Rapture, clinks against the stone wall, and falls harmlessly to the floor.

Rapture, however, drops her large sword onto the fire elemental from above, and then cleaves it several times in quick, precise swipes, sending sparks and ash flying (15, 12 damage). The fire elemental dissipates and does not reform.

Before it really even began... Combat over.

The fireplace is filled with ash now. Not even a thin trail of smoke comes up out of the gray substance.

"I wonder what my friend Conuld is up to right now," Tommy muses, while poking through the ashes of the dissipated fire elemental. "I suddenly thought of him for some reason. He's got a good hand with a crossbow. Well, I suppose we should look over the rest of this floor before moving up. If what Cassandra said is true, they may be able to move through the walls, so keep an eye out."

Tarag blinks and nearly misses the action.

"Well, that was impressive! So, now that we've disabled the summoning spell, we probably won't have any new earth elementals to deal with. I wonder where the fire summoning apparatus is? It would certainly be useful to be able to switch off the flames as well. Perhaps we should search each room carefully to try and find it."

"Shall we go back and check those side doors in the corridor now?"

"Very sensible. The two safest places to be are in the middle of the room away from any inner walls, and, er, right next to wherever Rapture is. Honestly, you're a marvel. Someone should write a song...." says Keldar. "Perhaps the other summoning device is somehow part of the fireplace. We have twenty minutes; let's look at one of the other rooms first."
