This thing got 4 stars in the big papers here in Toronto...

It is running at 95% on the tomatometer (with 200+ reviews considered). That's not a bad sign at all.

the critic gave it 5 stars at first but said he had to downgrade to 4 stars because there's basically nothing new in this movie that hasn't been done in the previous 6 films.

It was noted in one piece I read that of course there's nothing new in this movie. There was nothing new in the original either.

heh I like how that quote avoided using the word Nazi

but so far the reviews I've seen have given me renewed cofidence. I do want farm boys being guided by wizards to defeat the Dark Knight, the prequels failed that.

It's the sheer number not-new things that went into Star Wars that made it new. Because no-one had ever combined that many different influences into a single, coherent film before.

Everything from Flash Gordon to jidaigekii to Triumph of the Will. If you take a step back, it's a crazy-pants set of references.
