Outlook problem

Hi. My GF has deleted her address book on her computer running Win 98. This has caused the Outlook program to respond with an error message when she attempts to open. Researching the error message tells us that Outlook can't run without the address book and to reinstall it. The problem is that we can't as it's been deleted and she can't find her Win 98 disk. Anyone have any suggestions?

Sounds like she just removed her Outlook Address Book. This is usually listed as a service in Outlook, so it is probably still looking for it. With Outlook open you should be able to go to Tools | Services and then look for the entry labelled Outlook Address Book. If you aren't using it anymore just highlight it and choose remove. This will keep Outlook from trying to load the Outlook Address Book when it opens and should get rid of the error message.

We can't open outlook because there is no address book. Is there any way to install an address book back into the system?

Is this Outlook Express and not the full version of Outlook? If its Outlook Express what is the exact error message you are getting?

Been here a while...
I don't know if the old address book can be recovered. If anyone has a way to do that, try it before you do either of these.

First, I don't think Outlook came with Win98, unless it's the Express version. You'll probably need a copy of Office if you want to do a reinstall.

Second, if she has another computer with similar information on it, you can copy the outlook.pst file to the same directory on the messed up computer. Just be sure the file you're putting there was made in the same version or an earlier one.

It depends if you are talking about the full version of outlook, or just outlook express.

Outlook: In the control panel will be an item call Mail. Go into that and and remove the address book from the services list.

Outlook Express: Reinstall internet explorer, outlook express is part of it. Either download it from microsoft, or buy a computer magazine with it on the cover disk.
Or even better, install Thunderbird which IMO is a much better e-mail client, without OE's heavily exploited security holes. It should import all the old OE mail.
