Palladium Books has announced the return of the official Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles roleplaying game. It will be hitting Kickstarter on October 31st and will also include miniatures, dice, and more. You can sign up to the pre-launch page here.

Westland, MI – October 13, 2023 – Palladium Books and Paramount Consumer Products have joined forces to reissue the ever-popular role-playing game Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles & Other Strangeness.

The beloved, out-of-print Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles role-playing game and its sourcebooks are sought-after collector items that have enthralled generations since its release in 1985 as one of the first licensed TMNT products. They are returning to print as two deluxe hardcover collections of the RPG and sourcebooks. Each is being completely remastered by industry veteran Sean Owen Roberson and presented in full color, and Kevin Eastman, co-creator of Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles, will also provide a new painted cover.

Bonus material includes an array of new artwork, never before seen behind-the-scenes info and art, plus remembrances and tributes by renowned comic book and RPG creators including Eastman, Peter Laird, Freddie E. Williams II, Steven Cummings, Sophie Campbell, David Petersen and many more.

“This is incredibly exciting! I am 1000% onboard to help bring this historic and original TMNT Role Playing Game series back in a truly deluxe collector’s edition that will thrill original fans and open the door for new ones,” said Eastman. “I've made all my archives available for expanded behind-the-scenes content as well as a few top secret surprises you need to be part of. Stay tuned!”

What is the source for this info?
Apparently from Sean Owen Roberson.

It’s a licensor decision (Paramount) and they said no. Paramount…the owners of the Star Trek IP that has an RPG that has all the books as PDFs.

Just so everyone is aware, this is apparently physical product only - there won't be any PDF's.
If true this kills 99.9% of my interest. It does not make any logical sense. KS got religion around PDFs and has release most Palladium books as PDFs. It would be a damn shame if Paramount/Nickelodeon/Whoever had some stupid licensing split like LucasFilm/Arts does with Star Wars.

That’s…an outright beal breaker. What a terrible decision. In 2023? Wow. I knew Palladium was backasswards but damn.
It might not be Palladium's fault. A number of media companies (not the least of which is Disney) consider PDF to be software, and a separate license. Especially if there are computer games in the works.

And, in the most technical sense, PDF files are programs - they're a wrapper around a variety of embedded filetypes, including the ability to include javascript and postscript, both of which are Turing-complete languages, and SVG, which is right on the edge of Turing-complete.

The difference might be in the IP itself. Someone else may already have the rights for anything related to TMNT in PDF format that does not distinguish between a role playing game and another type of media.

I think IP rights can get weird in the way they get chopped up and sold off.

True. Battletech itself could be a whole white paper on the ways an IP can be Cuisinart-ed to the point that getting all the different rights back under one roof is impossible. And that includes a discussion of different levels of compensation, to include granting a job. (When Wiseman sold the video game rights to Microsoft, the package also came with the title of Vice President.)
