I don't know how it would look, but have you considered the higher-end "iron-on" transfers you can buy that print directly from an inkjet printer? The overall look would be largely dependent upon the cloth that you use, but you might be able to get a neat effect out of it.

a company called colorspan ( www.colorspan.com )manufactures a printer that prints on fabric they may be able to refer you to a vender in your area.

I talked to a gentleman at GenCon (I think he was at the GM Syndicate booth) that specialized in printing large battle maps at affordable prices. He gave me a card, but I seem to have lost it on the way back. Does anyone know the website (or know of options to print large maps)? Thanks in advance.
