D&D 5E Pushing & occupied spaces.

How are folks handling effects that push when there isn't open space for targets to go to or the path is blocked by other creatures? No where to go, no push? No where to go, go prone? Get squeezed* into smaller area?

*squeezing doesn't really do much when it comes to medium since Medium and small share the same space size.

It makes the most sense for it to cause squeezing or pushing the pile. I would suggest the one being pushed gain advantage on a contested roll (unintentional "help" from the other creature), but both be pushed if the roll fails. If there is a third creature behind the 2nd (or other obstacle), then the two should be squeezed. Still not perfect, but it should work for many instances.
