Question regarding D&D 5th Ed. Feats

I was chatting to a player from another D&D campaign yesterday, and he seems to be working on the assumption that the +5 Initiative bonus from the Alert feat stacks with his Dexterity bonus. I've always assumed that the feat bonus replaced the Dexterity bonus, since +5 is the maximum bonus possible for a player character without the aid of some very rare magical items.

Trawling through all the online articles, I haven't been able to find anything that says these bonuses stack. Can someone clear this up for me?

Sage Advice says it all the time: Bonuses from different sources stack. It's only things that are from the same source... like for instance two separate castings of the same spell, or two of the same magic item... when they don't.

Yes, since the Alert feat is not a DEX modifier, the two of them stack.
