The person who preposed it was roleplaying a wizard who was interested in seeing if it was possible to create a soul.

Then, technically, the wizard could say that he created a soul.

But wait! It gets better! The DM (the wizard's NPC opponents in wizard academia) can always counter that rather than creating a soul, he has simply drawn one into the body with the Awaken Undead. Oh no! The controversy remains!
