Resistances and dual damage types

I've run into this problem at a couple RPGA events I've DMed. We tried to find an answer quickly at the table but couldn't.

This issue at hand was that someone had Resist Fire 2 and the damage they took was "10 fire and necrotic damage". Does that person need resistance to both types of damage to mitigate 2 points of the damage?

A reference would be great if you have one. Thanks very much.

(I ruled the player took 2 less damage.)

When damage of a power is described as more than one type, divide the damage evenly between the damage types (round up for the first damage type, round down for all others). For example, a power that deals 25 fire and thunder damage deals 13 fire damage and 12 thunder damage.

See below.

Damage of multiple types requires resistance to both types in order to resist, and uses the lower value of the two. If the character has Resist Fire 2, they don't get any resistance from fire-and-necrotic damage. If they have Resist Fire 2 and Resist Necrotic 5, they resist 2 points of fire-and-necrotic damage.

Edit: Mort_Q, that rule has been superseded by errata - see the PHB1 updates on the WotC site for details.

Replace the second and third sentences of the fourth paragraph with the following: “Also, resistance doesn’t reduce damage unless the target has resistance to each type of damage from the attack, and then only the weakest of the resistances applies. For example, a character who has resist 10 lightning and resist 5 thunder who takes 15 lightning and thunder damage takes 10 damage because the resistance value to the combined damage types is limited by the lesser of the two resistances.”
