How do I create a PC based on Sabretooth?

Barbarian class? Race, how do I give him claws and have them be actually useful in combat?

Id love him to be a big clawed, hairy dude that can stay in the fight for a long time. He will also be complicated, not just a big dumb brute but calculated as most predators are.

Tabaxi open hand monk. Tabaxi gives you fur and claws, and monk improves them as you level. They can fight unarmed, jump, survive falls, self-heal (at level 6), launch a flurry of slashes, climb, and need to be more calculating (ki management) and more perceptive (Wis) than barbarians.

The spell "Alter Self" lets you grow claws for fighting. Take any strength based build. Select "Extend Spell" as one of your two metamagic selections. Take 4 levels of sorcerer. Sorcerer 4th level gives you 3 2nd level spell slots for casting "Alter Self". Each casting last 1 hour. Extend spell doubles the length so at 4th level you can fight with claws for 6 hours. Use your ABIs to increase your strength to 20 (or get one of the magic items that increases your strength). Note that barbarians can't concentrate on spells when raging but their 20th level +4 to strength makes them an interesting choice.
