Yeah, it would be a bit difficult to earn 300 XP at level 1 in 4 hours with only encounter-based XP, using 6-8 encounters, especially with 7 characters. I would be heartbroken, though, if our sessions where only 4 hours (they are typically 8-12 hours) as I would often feel like we didn't get much done. It's not surprising the time flies by so fast, though.

True, but I have seen a group of 4 PCs hit 2nd level in only 3 hours of intense play, playing the start of the Shattered Star AP converted to 5e with RAW XP - lots of CR 1/4 50 XP goblins!
