I've been thinking of replacing a sorcerers' ability to change spells every even level from 4th on up in my campaign with the abiltiy to swap out spells by following the research guidelines given in the DMG. They could either swap out for an existing spell or create one of their own to use. This would simulate that even sorceres have an ability to teach themselves new spells, although at the cost of a spell they already know. I've never liked the idea that sorcerers had no academic ability in the realm of magic.
I know this encroaches somewhat on the territory of wizardry, but I'd like to get feedback if others think it is too useful for sorcerers. It still keeps them from being as versatile as wizards as such changes take thousands of gold and weeks of in game time to acomplish, not something that will be feasible in many situations. If it is overbalanced, could it be balanced by making it twice as costly and/or time consuming for sorcerers to make such changes or some other option?
