I'm really excited to see where they are going with Chaos Bolt for the sorcerer and I really like the implied narrative of the person who wakes up one day and starts doing magic, then learns how to control it.
What if instead of Cantrips, Chaos Bolt is their at-will feature that grows and changes with levels (and sorcery points)? Perhaps let a little wild-magic in, nothing game changing or TPK causing at early levels, more like the fun Wild effects of the Wild Magic Barbarian (or the fun flavor effects of the old WM table). Just 6-8 possibilities that you roll for after you roll a 1 on the Chaos Bolt table. At worst you've wasted your turn, at best you get a minor benefit.
