[SPOILERS] James Bond and SPECTRE - A Short Review

Bond, James Bond.

I'm a HUGE Bond fan. I've read he Fleming books. I've seen all the movies multiple times. I've loved James Bond from the time I was a kid to the present. I remember a girl wrote in my Freshman Year yearbook, "You'd be a cool James Bond". Always liked that chick.

So....I just got back from seeing Spectre.

Yeah....spoilers ahead....

1.

And a 2.

And a don't read this post if you don't want spoilers.

And a 3.

And a way we go...

Yeah...I didn't like it. Or, better said, I just though it was "OK" and has not lived up to the other three Craig films. First off, the movie is slow. The actions sequences aren't as engaging as those in the other films. There were times when I was thinking, "C'mon! This is a Bond film! Pick up the pace!"

Big Spoiler: Blofeld is Bond's step brother!

Really? C'mon, man! That's like saying The Joker is Batman's brother. Or Moriarity is Sherlock Holmes' step brother.

IT's RIDICULOUS.

The opening action scene is pretty good. The actual story ain't bad, but it's a bit too much like Skyfall. And, like I said, the movie is slow. There's a car chase that is about as exciting as watching pancakes on the griddle. Even Bond looks bored. As he drives in this chase, he's on the phone doing research on a clue.

I didn't like the soundtrack, either. It rarely used the traditional Bond theme.

Bond's supposed to fall in love with the Bond Girl after he's known her for about 15 minutes. Makes no sense and doesn't have near the depth of this attachment to Vesper in Casino Royale.

One thing the film did do well was tie in the other Craig films. But, here to, it also falters because it tries to put in the film salutes to lots of previous Bond movies--way to many, in my opinion. I didn't think they were "neat". I just didn't care about them. Blofeld gets his right eye damaged, which is a tip of the hat to the Donald Pleasance version of Blofeld in You Only Live Twice. Goldfinger's Rolls Royce picks up Bond and the Girl in a type of high-class taxi-ride. There's a boat chase akin to the dual engine boat used on From Russia With Love. Blofeld's white fluffy cat shows up. There's a henchman similar to Jaws, but instead of having stainless steel teeth, this big brute of a guy has stainless steel thumbnails that he uses to squash people's heads, shoving his thumbs into their eye sockets. There are several more, but I just can't think of them all at the moment.

It's a very strange movie, with a disjointed feel and a slow pace.

I think it's the worst Bond of any that Craig has made. It's probably worth watching, as long as you're OK with Thoth Amon being Conan's step brother---ah, I mean, Blofeld being Bond's step brother--but keep your expectations low.

For a real Bond fan.....yeah, I'm disappointed.

Yep, I'm afraid I didn't like it either. Though actually, it's more complex than that: I actually thought it was great right up to the point where they got off the train, and then the whole thing fell to pieces. My over-riding response to that last third was "what the hell was that"?

And, yeah, the Bond movies probably shouldn't be stealing major plot points from "Goldmember".

Well, that was fun

From the reaction I am reading, does that explain why Daniel Craig stated he was done with the Bond role? (Even though he is contracted to do one more.)

Making the movies is a punishing schedule full of injuries, and he hates the months of press junkets afterwards. He said that just coming off this one and going into the press rounds. He was taking about the toll making these movies takes on him.

I don't think he did, did he? I thought his comment was more along the lines that the thought of doing it again made him want to slit his wrists - which seems pretty damn bad, except that he was talking having just finished one. The Bond role is pretty much all-consuming in the months he's doing it and he also likes doing other things, so I just read that as "I need a holiday".

It's a pity, because I think that he's been the best Bond. The tone of his character feels more like the books to me. It has to be pretty brutal on his personal life though.

Just watched it tonight, and really enjoyed it. Probably my 3rd favourite after Skyfall and Casino Royale (of the Daniel Craig bond films). The ending certainly felt like his swan song, as Water Bob said, and even though he has been my favourite, I wouldn't mind if he went out on a high now.
