Storms of Change, Part 3

Without the stress of combat, it is a fairly simple matter to raise the portcullis and prop it open. Going back to an earlier storeroom, the one just before the corridor leading up the hill to the two lookout posts, Manzanita finds a good supply of oil, and makes short work of the snakes in the pit.

Manzanita will enlist whatever help she can to try to identify the items with the most monetary value to put into what wagons are available. She asks Zanock to help push the bridge back over the pit. "Now, any objections to splashing some oil on the pillars and remaining equipment and torching this place before we go? I think we should head back to Caradon and report our findings to the warden."

After a few hours, the party stands just outside of the large cave entrance. The captured horses are harnessed to the two carts filled with loot.

Manzanita lights a torch, and tosses it over the snake pit into the cave. Flames spread across the floor as the oil burns, burning the crates and travelling deep into the tunnels. Soon the place is a roaring inferno. Wind whips Manzanita's hair as air is sucked into the caverns to feed the flames, and black smoke billows from the hidden hilltop lookout.

The captured half-orc looks on fearfully as the party hands him some survival gear and sets him loose. He dashes off, pauses for a moment, then turns around and calls out "Be careful, Hextor's Church brought ghouls here, the Prin River Valley is filled with them, to keep the raiders from Rogan out." Then, darting his eyes about and clutching his axe, he darts off into the woods and disappears. Remembering the strange sounds you've been hearing in the darkness of night or in the mist, you wonder. But the sun is shining down into the valley now, and the mists have all dissipated.

Manzanita spurs Busephelous, and leaves the burning dungeon behind. Verbatim scouts ahead. Filbert and Mirena drive the first cart, with Braveheart sitting next to them, while Zanock drives the second cart, glad to be on something a little more solid than Piece of Meat.

With the carts it will be difficult to pass the mountainous terrain to the east, the party instead heads south down the valley. The horses occasionally have trouble pulling the carts, as there are no roads in this area, but good time is made. As the western mountains cast long shadows over the valley, the party continues on in the dusk, wanting to leave the valley behind and reach the Duchy of Rogan. Dusk darkens into night, and the mist starts to fill the valley, but the party continues on, torches and lanterns lit. The horses, especially those pulling the carts or carrying heavy burdens, start to strain in the darkness.

Then, in the distance, you see a light in the night sky. Approaching, you see one of the heavily fortified watchtowers the Duchy of Rogan has placed along the border to the wilderness. As you near the tower you are spotted, and are approached by mounted guards. They are quite suspicious of you, and question you at length. You convince them that you are not bandits, or worse, and are let through. They give you directions to a nearby town with an inn.

The rest of the night's journey, on a roughly paved dirt road, is delightful. You know that Rogan has been overrun by bandits and other dangers, but the night seems peaceful, calm, and free of dangers. There are no mists here, and the sky is clear and full of sparkling stars, while gentle summer breezes calm the spirits of both you and your mounts. You feel greatly at home here, as you pass the scattered lights of farmhouses. Mirena, Alyssa, and Devan are reminded of the farms they grew up in. Rowyn recalls singing songs for the people of her village, gathered around a fire in the summer night. Manzanita remembers studying in the city of Masar, not far to the south, staring out the library window at the night sky. Zanock, Dunathar, Filbert and Adromon have walked through the Duchy on nights such as this, their hearts filled with hope and expectations for the future.

After a restful night in the small country inn, you set off in the morning for Carodan.

Manzanita plans to let the others sell the captured equipment once they arrive in Carodan and settle into their quarters. She'll go to the Warden and give a report.

Rowyn is torn between going with Manzanita and helping sell the goods they brought back with them. Finally, she grabs her personal belongings off the wagon they were stored in and follows Manzanita.

"Perhaps we should continue without Zanock? Or maybe find some others to complement our group?" she asks once they are out of earshot.

"Rowyn. I don't trust that orc, but he has been extremely useful in combat. I've never seen anyone that strong before. I don't think we would have survived our encounters with the Hextorites without him. If he'll stay with us, then I think we should let him. We'll just have to keep any eye on him."

"I also don't know what the warden will want us to do next. The fact that the Hextorites had a catapolt tells me that they were preparing to attack a fortified position. They didn't have the manpower to do it themselves, either. They were either expecting reinforcements, or were going to ally themselves with someone. Perhaps even the orcs. Investigating this may take higher priority than this temple we were asked to look into. Let's see what our employers have to say before making any more decisions."

Rowyn nods fervently. "If Zanock wishes to stay, he'd be welcome for those exact reasons! As for the Hextorites, they are a concern . . . I agree with your decision to wait and see. This might be a much larger problem than anyone had realized."

Back in Carodan

It is the last days of Harvest, and the warm summer air holds the hint of the coming chill. The harvest has been a good one, and the road is filled with carts bringing stockpiles of grain to Carodan.

Carodan stands defiantly against the wildlands as workers swarm over it, reinforcing its defenses of stone and wood. There is a steady stream of soldiers and militia coming and going. There are Warden Ricsten's and House Hulvan's troops, Dwarven troops from the Diamond Mountains, Elven troops from the Severin Forest, and occasionally a band of mounted warriors led by a Knight of Shillen. There are also mercenaries and militia of all sorts.

Lagren shouts out a greeting as the heroes enter the Slashing Sword. Wealthier now, and loaded down with loot, the party gets private rooms and guarded stabling. The more expensive, better-quality food and drink is very good, certainly worth it. Looking around, there is no sign of the agents of House Dharnan you saw earlier.

Manzanita and Rowyn go to the Warden's residence, and finds long lines of soldiers and mercenaries waiting to see him. Most of those waiting in line are bloodied bounty hunters, carrying proof of their kills to show the Warden. Every now and then a scout arrives and is ushered in ahead of everyone else. Unfortunately, Manzanita and Rowyn are unable to convince the guards that they are anything other than bounty hunters, like the others in line. Having arrived late in the afternoon, Manzanita and Rowyn are not able to see the Warden today, but their names are higher on the list for tomorrow.

Meanwhile the others have sorted through all of the loot. Dunathar searches the large box, disarms a trap and picks the lock. The box is filled with gold. Combined with the proceeds from the captured weapons, armor, carts, and horses, and after subtracting expenses for staying at the inn, the party has a combined 8,120 gp. Additionally, there is a heavy steel shield (faint abjuration).

Manzanita and Rowyn return to a serious discussion among the group. It's clear that war is again on the horizon. Recent reports tell of Gorukan armies beginning to move slowly through the northern wilderness towards Carodan, and all of Carodan is nervous and fearful. Dunathar talks of taking his share and returning to his clan with the respect that wealth brings. Adromon speaks of signing up with Warden Ricsten's army, possibly taking command of a platoon. Devan speaks of pursuing Shadow, who was last spotted right here, in Carodan. Alyssa says nothing, but she has a far away look in her eyes. Filbert wonders if it might not be wise to join up with the local temple of Fharlanghn, and help them as best he can.

No final decisions are made, and the party retires to their rooms for the night.

In her room, Rowyn sees the sack of journals she had taken from the cleric, and lighting a lantern, begins to read through them.

Manzanita's intentions are unchanged. The regular army is necessary, certainly, to fight the Gorukan invasion. But that is not my place. I can do more, I think, by working in a small group to finding out the secrets of Linace Keep. That is much more interesting work, to boot.

Manzanita retreats to her room and begins to copy burning hands into her spellbook. She'll return to the Warden's office 24 hours later to again try to make her report.

Manzanita returns to her room and scribes Burning Hands into her spellbook. It's very late at night when she finishes, but as she stands up to stretch, she notices that light is coming under the door from Rowyn's room.

Knocking quietly on the door, Manzanita enters to find Rowyn sitting at a desk, with the journals taken from the priest of Hextor all around her. Calling Manzanita over, Rowyn rubs her eyes with ink-stained fingers and shows her several parchments of text she had deciphered from the journals, mixed in with all sorts of mundane details and reports...
