D&D 5E The Elder Elemental Eye: Ghaunadaur, Tharizdun, and the Forgotten Realms.

Spoilers!!!!! Princes of the Apocalypse Spoilers!!!!

Just got Princes of the Apocalypse. Reading through the final dungeons actually makes me think that the Elder Elemental Eye in Faerun really IS going to be Ghaunadaur. Or at least there is a shrine to Ghaunadaur in the Fane of the Elder Elemental Eye. Most probably Ghaunadaur is going to be held out as the FR equivalent to Tharizdun...just as the 5e PHB (I think? DMG maybe?) states that Takhisis is Dragonlance's equivalent of Tiamat. And also making fears about pulling Greyhawk out of the Realms somewhat misplaced. As far as I can tell thusfar, PotA is actually silent on the matter :) Tharizdun's obex (described in other terms), ziggurats, and assorted madness/purple references appear in places.

The section about Converting it to other worlds is the only place they suggest that Tharizdun could be the Eleder Elemental Eye. (While also saying he might not be.)

Tharizdun's original portfolio was god of doorways and portals. He created the Astral Dreadnoughts (Titans that guard astral portals) and was the god who slew the Guardian of the Living Gate and entered the Far Realm and took the Shard of Evil. His actions created both the first Elder Evils and the first demons.
Knowing his obsession with doorways, the other gods used this to lure him into the Demiplane of Imprisonment and trap him there. However, as the trap was sprung, Tharizdun lashed out and three great "chunks" were cut from him.
The first represented his deific nature and fled to take refuge amongst a pantheon of outcast gods -- the Drow pantheon. This is Ghaunadaur.
The second represented his Elder Evil nature and fled to the Elemental Planes. Gygax named this being Vilp-akf'cho Rentaq, and he imbued power from the shard into a number of beings known as the evil Archomentals, or the Princes of Elemental Evil.
The third represented his role as the father of demons and fled to the newly created Abyss. There in the Abyss was the "wound" created when he plunged the shard into the elemental chaos and created the Abyss. This wound had a feral sentience, and the third part of Tharizdun inhabited it and it became Juiblex, the Faceless Lord.
As a cool side note, when the shard broke open and the thirteen Obyriths were set free, one leaped into the form of a Primordial as it was being transformed into a Demon Lord. Thus was born Demogorgon -- half demon, half obyrith.

Legend
Ghaunadaur is discussed in MTOFs and they do mention that is was originally a member of the Seldarine, sided with Lolth at first, then tried to betray her to Corellon Larethan and got deboned for his trouble. It does say both this and the stories that say he is far more ancient could both be truth, begs some serious questions and suggests that Ghaunadaur joined with a far older evil after being deboned.

Why did you necro this thread. And none of this stuff is true in the current edition. (I don't even think most of this is true in the older editions.) Did you just post your version of Tharizdun for some reason?
