I concur with Blackwarder. This is something that should be listed in the back of several modules and smack dab in the PHB wouldn't be so bad. I'd add #8to the must list...but all 10 are good guidelines/suggestions.

Having read my fair share of the WotC message boards, I agree that so many people ignore #2 - to them the DM is an enemy, because they know secrets the players don't, and they shouldn't be allowed to make decisions for the good of the game if it goes against player will.
