Days 224 - 241: Boga City

GM: During the remainder of the Harvest Season, room and board is included as part of the wage agreement, but nightly tavern visits are not. There are several tavern of varying types within the city, even several within a single district. The Crew hears a multitude of languages within the walls but mostly Centrin, which is the official language of Boga City. Taylar is, at first, able to communicate with more people than the others since there is a significant Maldrog population.

Based on character personality and health 386 coins have been deducted from the party total for the tavern visits.

Taylar suggests climbing equipment, heavier blankets if needed, food, some kind of writing utensils and paper to record interesting points of note on their path. He will inquire among the friendlier patrons of the tavern to see if anyone has experience in the Spine and if they have any useful information.
GM: Taylar learns that climbing equipment can be acquired but should not be necessary as the ruins, all of which are now off the beaten path, should not require any scaling and even extra rope is likely unnecessary. Vittero, at first surprised by Taylar's suggestion, confesses that he has a ledger and stile in his pack given by his father, but had been neglecting making any recordings. He promises to try to start making some notes.

Several Maldrog discuss possibilities concerning the Keep of the Rising Sun, explaining that there is an abandoned mining camp northward of the Eastward Pass that should be easy to locate. From there the party should continue northward into the mountains likely more along the eastern side. Since trade with Eastaboga has stopped, eastward travel from the city has all but stopped, as well.

Adi pipes up..."Maybe we could talk to the one of the captains... if we make a name for ourselves we could be sell swords, like in the stories."
While Adi offers this suggestion one evening, Vittero rolls his eyes, of course with the aid of the ale he actually rolls his whole head instead of just his eyes.
"We have been here for days and not a single drunken brawl! Natureless Fairies, there is hardly even the staggering drunk. Oops! Sorry Raven, I know you don't like woodland vulgarity. I need to learn some better profanity. The Maldrog seem to have a few good ones. Anyway, once we finish picking beans, I, for one, do not want to start sweeping tavern floors."

Maka says, “Now that we have a few francs saved up, we should see about getting our tunics repaired before setting out for this keep. Or perhaps even look at purchasing stronger coverings, or adding accessory pieces like bracers and greaves. If we’re serious about being adventurers, we should approach it seriously. Who knows WHO or WHAT awaits us in those ruins?”
GM: Disappointingly, the expense for armoring seems excessive. Though technically it is not, with the crew's meager funds, it still seems so. The party learns that a lot of equipment and gear is available and that weaponry is much less expensive than armoring. The crew can have all their clothing repaired for 31 coins.

Raven Elk listens to his friends absent-mindedly, he thinking about the results of his encounters with the local fauna... "Whichever choice we make, stay or go, the repair of our armor, and maybe some additions would do us well for any future endeavors we have planned."
Vittero responds.
"Good point. I know I need some more arrows. I am sure Maka does as well. With arrows, we can likely keep ourselves supplied with food while we travel."
GM: Raven Elk is impressed to discover that an extensive park stretches through the city. The park is well maintained with fruit bearing and nut producing trees. The wildlife just within the park is quite varied and prolific. As Raven is admiring the the small songbird perched upon his finger, he is greeted by an aged Faethrin, who seems to just belong in the park. Since Faethrin do not readily show age, this one must be very old, indeed. He speaks quietly, in Thisidan, about various aspects of the park and its denizens. Just before the man is departing, he pauses and looks back at Raven, "You are a dreamer. That is of quite a portent. Use it benevolently."

The image of a roaring fire resurfaces in Raven Elk's mind. The overwhelming deja vu sends chills up his spine. He watches as the departing man seems to blend into the surrounding foliage so as to be completely unobservable.

Maka says, "We should buy three sets (6 pieces) of bracers, and give them to Adi, Raven, and Taylar; Vittero and I don't need them as much, since we prefer to stay at range. When we earn some more money, we should get those three some greaves as well. Once that's done, we could think about bracers and greaves for Vittero and I. But the front-liners should have priority."

Days 241 - 243: Heading Eastward

OOC: GM NOTE:
As a point of observation from the beta test scenario, it has been determined that the acquisition and sale of live game animals is the most profitable venture for PCs, unlike the search for ore as I had previously been encouraging.

Weather:
True to the turning of the season, as if the weather knew the date, the Harvesting Season ends and the Shiftings Season ushers in with a change. The air has cooled some and the crew departs traveling through a light rain. The slight breeze makes it feel significantly cooler than it had been.

Travel:
The land becomes more hilly the farther east the crew travels. It takes most of the first day to clear the farm areas around Boga City. Afterward, the grassy plains become more significantly rolling hills with more breaks and rock formation, also dotted by more frequent copses of trees. At the foothills leading into the pass, the area is sparsely wooded and the fertile grasses are no more.
[sblock=Observation]Raven Elk: 15 + 19(empathy) + 97(d100) + 40(luck) = 171
Maka: 17 + 17(empathy) + 66(d100) = 100
Vittero: 19 + 18(empathy) + 84(d100) = 121
Taylar: 17 + 16(empathy) + 55(d100) = 88
Adisakti: 24 + 10(empathy) + 63(d100) = 97[/sblock]
Observations:
The crew discovers the usual fauna of varmints, orb weavers, small lizards, insects, and birds. On this particular two day trip, the crew also notices a medium-sized lizard sunning on a distant rock. The lizard is about 4' in total length.

Vittero has taken a fascination with collecting beetle carapaces while traveling, in addition to helping Maka hunt for game. This particular trip only varmints are collected for food.
GM: Vittero is able to collect 13 pair of elytra.

Taylar shrugs. "Agreed."

While they travel Taylar will use Way to make a Mining search for more zinc, calcium, lead, slate, flint, and lodestone. He is more interested in using them for their Way enhancements than selling them.

He will work with Vittero to keep a record of their trip, complete with rudimentary drawings.

While they travel Taylar will use Way to make a Mining search for more zinc, calcium, lead, slate, flint, and lodestone. He is more interested in using them for their Way enhancements than selling them.
OOC: GM NOTE:
This is a very good idea as the items are readily usable during combat even if sellable quantities are not located.

[sblock=Mining]Effectiveness:

  • Konokoro (Divination Task) +
  • Mind + Knowledge +
  • Commercial + d100
This active task is applied to the search for usable metal or stone.
Taylar: 17 + 16(konokoro) + 61(d100) = 94 + 100(conduit) = 194[/sblock]
GM: With the aid of the various conduits, Taylar is able to locate all the material he was seeking, except calcium or slate. He locates 2 ingots of zinc, 2 ingots of lead, 2 pieces of flint, and 2 lodestones. Perhaps calcium and slate are not located in this particular terrain. The other items were discovered in such a manner so as to give the impression of random occurrence rather than any geologic significance.

Vittero thanks Taylar for reminding him. As it turns out, Vittero is fairly proficient in taking notes and even crude cartography.

He wonders how he could (manipulate Way) to help him hide better, or maybe he should just attach leaves to his clothes. Adi addresses the group...Have you guys tried using way to make your attacks faster?
Vittero responds.
"I think so, not only faster but more accurate as well. I am not sure exactly what I am doing as I do not feel overly more motile or stronger, but I am instinctively manipulating Way to augment combat, somehow. I will bet that all of us are doing so. It has just become second nature. Like breathing, we do it without thinking about it."

OOC: GM NOTE:
Fury:
Affect: Self
Effectiveness:
  • Essence + Confluence +
  • Collegiate
This passive technique is used to augment the outcome of Combat and various Commercial tasks and to resisting effects that are intended to damage Body. The specific use of this technique is listed under each Combat and Commercial Task to which it may be applied. There is no random aspect to this task.

Effectiveness:
  • Essence + Adhesion +
  • Mind + Knowledge + Will +
  • Collegiate
This can dampen an area of illumination around the touched object, equal to a sphere with a radius of up to 1 stride. This cannot be used to generate an absence of light. It will only darken natural light by 1 category so that full sun can be made to appear shaded, shaded light to look like dust, dusk to full night. If used in an area that is already dark it will negate night vision. The duration of the darkness is equal to 1 minute per cumulative Will ability.

Basic Tasks
Once a character has reached 10 ranks in the Collegiate Skill, more techniques become available to augment combat and stealth.

Novice Elemental Tasks:
The following active tasks involve the manipulation of Chemical, Electromagnetic, Mechanical, or Thermal Way. Unless otherwise stated the range of these tasks is measured in strides. 1 stride = ~3'.

Days 241 - 243: While Traveling: Raven Elk

Raven Elk keeps meeting with animals, especially birds. Any and all that come to his hand, he uses Way to find out what is around and ahead of them as they travel.
OOC: Animal Kinship:
Effectiveness:
  • Empathy (Divination Task) +
  • Mind + Knowledge +
  • Commercial + d100
This active task refers to working with any type of animal to understand behavior and motivation. This is the preliminary process in naturally befriending and training an animal. An animal cannot be trained beyond its mental capacity.
Raven Elk: 15 + 19(empathy) + 80(d100) = 114

GM: Raven Elk is, at first, frustrated to not be able to coax any birds to come anywhere near him, like within the park in Boga City. He finally decides that the animals in the park are much more adjusted to the presence of people and are not a good indicator of animals in the wild.

OOC: GM NOTE:
The manipulation of Way is limited to touch until a character can obtain 10 ranks in the Collegiate Skill. After this, under the Academic or Theologic Skill, a character may attempt to befriend an animal, or even a person, at a distance.

OOC: Distances:
1 stride = ~3'
2 strides = 1 pace = ~6'
10 paces = 1 leg = ~60'
10 legs = 1 run = ~600'

[sblock=Observation]Raven Elk: 15 + 19(empathy) + 63(d100) = 97

Adisakti: 24 + 10(empathy) + 85(d100) = 119[/sblock]
The crew begins the switchback climb into the mountains. Travel while climbing is at a third of the rate it was while traveling the road across the plains. Several places along the switchbacks, the crew can look back out over the plains and admire the beauty to the horizon line. Looking up the mountain in the direction of travel, sighting distance is markedly shortened due to the rising elevation.

Weather:
The temperature notably cools as the party climbs to higher elevation, especially at night, but this still being a warmer party of the year, the change is comfortable rather than burdensome. There is a light breeze occasionally.

Observations:
Each person's sensitivity is still limited to a matter of steps, nothing farther. Creatures that can readily be observed at such short distance are small birds, which are extremely skittish and take flight when they notice people, insects, small lizards, orb weavers, and varmints.

At distances numbered in paces creatures that can be readily observed are medium sized birds, which are also extremely skittish and will run or take flight at distances too great to allow interaction, medium snakes and lizards, hunting spiders, large varmints, and hostile peoples. On these three days, only medium sized birds are encountered, some at a close enough distance to allow Maka or Vittero to shoot one for food.

Looking back over the plains, at distances that will only allow for recognition and no possibility of interaction are large birds, small game animals, small predators, or hostile people.

No people are observed during this particular trip.
OOC: GM NOTE:
As the characters improve their skills of observation and empathy, interaction with more rare encounters becomes possible at greater distances.
