Want and idea for a mech-inclined gnome

IMC, the gnomes are mechanics and the like. I want to replace have the illusion powers from the PHB with some kind of mechanical abilites. Maybe something like the gnome artificer in Magic of Faerun (which I don't own, so I can't just grab that).

I don't want to unbalance the gnomes, so the abilities need to be minor but useful. Any ideas?
