I have no money to spend on him so im thinking either a wizard, sorc, or a monk. Please give me your thoughts on what he should have to best fit being a cohort to this character.

Hmm ..

Combat Casting, also helps when reading scrolls
Improved Initiative, always good to act first
Improved Familiar, getting something that can actually do something

I hope you mean a 13th-level cohort. Right?

And he will have the appropriate amount of equipment for an NPC of his level. Sure, it's not as much as PCs get, by far, but it's enough to matter at that level.

A fighter type of some kind is a good idea. A monk would work well, I think.

3.0 requires that the cohort be at least one level behind the PC. Regardless of your Leadership score.

3.5 requires that it be under by at least 2.

Since you are using 3.0, your cohort is, at most, 14th-level.

Also, since I now know you are using 3.0, how do you get 10 ranks of UMD when you only have 2 levels of Rogue? You would be restricted to 5 ranks since it is a restricted skill (assuming you started as a rogue).

I believe that is how the rule went. Sheesh, I'm already in 3.5 mode and need to double think all the old 3.0 rules I thought I knew.

Also, BTW, he should be an Ex-Paladin (not a Paladin) - and all that it entails, since he is Neutral.

Ive made him lawful good now because of his monk follower and his paladin ranks. My dm allowed the umd thingy because he didnt really care. He thought the idea was funny.

Improved Familiar won't do any good I don't see a single arcane caster level.
