Well they could taste fantastic, which might explain why none of them survived to modern times...

Hmmm...you could be right. From the menu at Nachonomicon*, I pulled these recipe names:

Roc au Vin
Dragon Rolls
Ki-Rin Beer
Unicorny Dogs
Pasta al Formian
Grick-Fil-A
Chimichangelings
C'thulhupas

* its a restaurant chain owned by Great Old Juan

You forgot Falcon on a Stick (for fans of old Judge's Guild adventures).

So far the replies have focused almost entirely upon natural animals, but don't neglect the wide variety of fantastical creatures that might populate the region also. An ogre would make a tasty snack for a Roc, and a hill giant would be a challenging but filling prey.

Well, the MM does mention that Rocs find giant purple worms to be a delicacy.

On real-world eating habits and body weight: note that the larger the animal gets, the less it eats, relatively speaking. For example, mice eat about 10% or more of their body weight each day, while large bovines eat more like 2.5%-5% (hay or grass, respectively) of what they weigh. Rocs weigh 10 times as much as a milk cow, so go figure.
