After seeing responses to the poll "how did you start", and the suggestion that's come up in other threads about how ENWorld-ers tend toward the old-time gamer side, let's see if this is true. Note that this is when you started playing D+D specifically; if your first RPG experience was with another system, it doesn't count for these purposes. :)

I first played D&D when I was 5 ('84). I used the red box set, and I was the fighter. My friend and I did not play for very long, but I was hooked. I didn't play again till 2nd edition in high school.

I was 12 years old when a friend called Ashley Waters introduced me to D&D during lunch hours at school. We'd play in the library. Soon after I bought the Basic, Expert and Companion box sets and the Orcs of Thar Gazeteer in a bundle, and started collecting. Been DMing pretty much ever since.

1982. My older brother played. He "grew out of it" a few years later, but I still play. But I'm the baby of the family, so I don't have to grow up!

1983, Basic D&D

I started D&D in May 1983
-- with the 1981 Moldvay/Otus Magenta Basic Set (right between the Holmes Mono Blue and the Mentzer Red).

Sometime shortly before that I vaguely remember playing a small part of a one-off adventure in C2 - Ghost Tower of Inverness and something to do with Tegel Manor which inspired me to ask/beg for D&D for my birthday.

Wow, 23 years of gaming goodness and counting...
