I do the same.
While I have nothing against charatcer sheets and excel files (the latter being very useful for HERO), sometimes character sheets, with all the boxes and labeled fields, feel too much like *forms*. to me. I start feeling like I'm doing my taxes.
So, I created a basic format using Word that I type stats directly into; when the character changes, I update the file. I also paste in appropriate art, like some of the free pics on Claudio Pozas' site, or ones I scan in from various sources.
Also, this way I'm intimately familiar with the layout of the sheet. I've seen all too often players get handed a pre-made sheet or blank form from their DM, and then never know where to look for information when they need it. E.g., "My touch AC is... uh... where the heck... 14!"
