Never tell someone you think might be interested in you anything like, "I've always just wished a man would give me flowers on his own, without me having to ask for them."

What option does that give the man? If he was going to give you flowers, you've ruined his efforts. If he hadn't thought of it yet, he's going to think he should, but again, he'll be afraid of seeming like he was just replying to what you said, rather than being romantic on his own.

That reminds me of some conversations I've had with McDonalds counter staff.

"I'll have a combo meal, please."
[They reach for their keypad; pause; look up.]
"Uh... which combo meal?"
"Surprise me."
[They look startled for a moment.]
"Uh... okay. Big Mac okay?"
"Well. That would have been okay. But now it's not a surprise any more, is it? Pick something else, and don't tell me."
"Um. Okay, that'll be $5.95..."

I can not hate a holiday of love, sure I have not been lucky at it but the day has always been kind to me. I am concerned about how is is becoming a commercial meca but it has yet to invade other holidays.

Yep. There's some commercialism but it's very low-key. Apart from that, though - nothing.
Still... A few years ago, there wasn't even this (IIRC) so I guess it's on the rise.

Maybe there's a sermon in church or something, though; I wouldn't know, I'm not religious and neither are my friends, relatives, acquaintances, etc. - just like most of my countrymen. (Even though a lot of Austrians are catholic on paper. )
