IMO, you can't compare the ability as described without it being magical. There is no essential reason this loop should be different for comparable magic abilities.

That you don't make it a power. You talk to your GM and describe what you're trying to do. If they think it would definitely work, it works. If they think it definitely doesn't work, it doesn't. If they're not sure, an appropriate ability (with appropriate modifiers) is performed.
You know, the gameplay loop.
Oh, I use Hulk and Herc as my upper limits for D&D fighter capabilities. This is supposed to be a fantasy world after all.but using these as your "upper limits" for D&D fighting capabilities ignores the mismatch between the action movie genre expectations and the typical scope and hazards of D&D combat at high levels.
You are thinking of third ed there - the cube doesn't get prone immunity till 5thCan they trip an ooze or gelatinous cube though? (Or is that another edition or an urban legend).
Why? What is the essential difference between insult delivery and spell delivery?IMO, you can't compare the ability as described without it being magical.
Wikipedia also has John Mclain as John Mclain (character). Does this mean all characters are Jogn Mclain?Sorry, we'll just have to disagree about that. The Wikipedia entry for 'Magic' literally has the title 'Magic(supernatural)'.
I know it.So I agree with that 100%. It's one of the many reasons I love Shadowdark.
But as you know perfectly well, D&D has drifted toward the end of the design spectrum where you don't improvise and adjudicate, you press buttons on your character sheet. That's how people play D&D. It's one reason I've stopped playing D&D.
You are howling against the wind.
Would you say you should apply that to say, a rogue's Sneak Attack or Evasion abilities? That you don't make it a power. You talk to your GM and describe what you're trying to do. And I've started hating the D&D fandom because people keep using this stupid 'button pressing' narrative to describe 'having actual reliable capability as opposed to leaving it all to DM whims'.So I agree with that 100%. It's one of the many reasons I love Shadowdark.

One can override human behavior regardless of circumstance, and the other has to interact with the humans and the world we have. That's the only answer for me, but its fine if you disagree. Why? What is the essential difference between insult delivery and spell delivery?
