Would a Wiz 3/Sor 1 Evoker be able to cast spells from a prohibited school as a sorcerer?

I would think the answer is "no"... but I can find no mention of it in the PHB.

Thanks!!!

Again, I find myself in agreement with CRGreathouse. The answer is "yes".

Really? So as a Wizard, it would take a Wish spell for me to be able to cast a spell from a prohibited school... but one level in Sorcerer and I can figure out those spells?

We'll see what my DM has to say about it... but thanks!

Nope. It takes a Wish for you to prepare a spell from a prohibited school. Plus, they're not on your spell list for the purposes of scrolls, etc.

It's just like having a Cleric/Wizard, actually. The fact that you can't prepare Heal in one of your Wizard slots doesn't affect your ability to prepare it in one of your Cleric slots. The spell choices for a Sorceror/Wizard work the same way, there's just a lot more overlap in their spell lists. The two sets of spell choices available do not impact each other.

Bear in mind that this works both ways, too. Your Transmuter/Sorceror with Evocation as his prohibited school might know Magic Missile as a Sorceror, but that doesn't let him prepare it in a Wizard spell slot. And the spells he has in his spellbook or prepared in the Wizard spell slots cannot be cast spontaneously with the Sorceror slots.

What about items? Let's say I have a Transmuter (Evocation opposition) 19 / Sorcerer 1. Can I then use a wand of Fireball? Normally you wouldn't since Fireball is an Evocation spell, but since it's on your Sorcerer's spell list, can you use it?

Yep. Similar to a Cleric with the magic Domain, but your level for using the item would equal your Sorcerer level.

Well, that doesn't matter for wands, now does it?

Tome & Blood actually recommends taking a level of sorc as and end-run around magic item restrictions for specialist wizards. Keep in mind Christian's post, though; as a Sor1/Evo3, you can learn and cast spells from any school, including schools from which you are barred as an evoker, using your sorcerer spellcasting abilities ONLY. Your evoker spellcasting capabilities are still subject to the restricted schools limitation.

Sorry, but this is wrong. If you cast Wish, you can among other things "Duplicate any wizard or sorcerer spell of 7th level or lower even if it's from a prohibited school."
