Peter Lee talks about Modrons miniatures

I'm too new to DnD to know much about Modrons, so I'll bite, what do people like/dislike about them?

They are the embodiment of the planescape/great wheel mythology. For the modrons, its about order. If that sort of thing works for you, great, if not then they'll probably rub wrong.

WotC... for your market research... count me in the camp that severely dislikes modrons and thinks the game is better off without them.

Maybe their time has passed, but I don't think it would take much to re-imagine them.

Well fwiw, since Modrons are very much WotC IP even if they've never really done anything with them for almost a decade, I've had the fun of trying to create a replacement race of lawful exemplars for Paizo's Golarion/Pathfinder cosmology. Hopefully folks will like the Axiomites; and they can be best described as the conceptual lovechild of DiTerlizzi's illustration of the moignos and a society of individual (non-hivemind) modrons who discovered nano-tech.

Alas, modrons made the fatal mistake of not appearing in 1e Fiend Folio, so I am neutral toward them. I mostly checked out of AD&D during 2e, so I know little about them WRT Planescape.

OTOH, I don't have a knee jerk, negative reaction toward them. I'm the guy who designed a 4e version of the carbuncle (for my own use, not in a published product), so I'm pretty liberal with my love of wacky monsters.

Okay, I am torn.

Basically, Modrons look ridicilous. Anthrophormized Platonic Bodies...

But their illustration still manages to be awesome, maybe in a comedial way...

But you know, if I was a marketing guy, I could totally see the point in saying "you know, if we use them in the game, people will say we jumped the shark or lost it. That they can't take the game serious - and we know, D&D is serious business, after all - with them in the game..."
Of course, they might also be "cool, something for the kids and the guys that just love wacky ideas"...

So yeah, I am torn...
 


Modrons aren't any more wacky than the walking goth clubs known as the Shadar-Kai that got snuck into the MM, or any more comedic than the 4e tiefling's migraine-boners.

Okay, that sounds pretty hostile. Modrons are certainly eccentric for pseudo-medievalness. I can see why people don't like them. Honest, you are justified. You don't have to like Modrons, and the less page count they take up the more room can be wasted on other things.

But I like 'em. I like weirdness. I like alien. I like flumphs and triaphegs and nogglers. I like campestri, for Pete's sake, and they weren't even a notable eccentricity like the modrons.

I'm willing to admit that it's a niche market. I preferred it when Necromancer at least had my back. ;)
 

They may look out of place, but they are from the plane of Nirvana of balance and absolute order. Since the alignment structure has changed and the Great Wheel change, we may never see them again K.Midget.

Those wanting more information on them should check Monster Manual II for 1st edition.

Some higher up ones wouldn't be too hard to see minis of if their planes survives to 4th.

Was there ever modron minis? I can't find them anywhere in any archive.
