ignorelist function

Seems when you add someone to the ignorelist, it does not display a post from that poster on any page.

This poses a problem when viewing newest posts as there is no post marker on the page to go to and when viewing the latest post for a thread the page remains at the top of the page rather than even going down to a post realtive to where you last viewed the thread.

I don't know if this is something to do with the new version of vBulletin, or a hack to the system, but other forums show a marker for the deleted post that the page goes down to so you can see that a post is not displayed and go to the latest post.

Someone may want to look into that as it makes it difficult for using the ignorelist feature and still try to view the forums with the "View First Unread" link or
firstnew.png
icon from the forums index.

I'm really sorry, but try as I might I just can't parse that sentence! Could you rephrase what you mean? :)

Not that I can use ignore lists, but I'll try:

Normally, if you try to read the "new unread" posts in a thread, you go to the thread page, and then your browser jumps down to the first unread post.

If the first "new unread" post is an ignored post, you go to the page, but your browser doesn't jump down. You have to scroll down to the stuff you haven't read yet.

In which case, that's a vBulletin issue and not an ENWorld issue, and there's not much that can be done about it. Perhaps a bug report could be placed with them.

Correct. Because nothing exists to jump down to with the way the ignore function is not even placing a marker on the page to where the ignored post should have been, and doesn't automatically jump to the next post that comes after the one that is ignored.

Not neccesarily. I have never seen the issue before as previous version (vBulletin below v.3) showed a spoiler type section where the "a name" section was contained and allowed you to view the post anyway. So as Umbran stated, there is nothing to tell the browser to drop down to that post number as the post is completely not there on the displayed page.

I have only seen this happen with vBulletin (any version) here on ENWorld.

So it might be something a bit off in the "viewtopic" file, or whatever it is in this new version of vBulletin that is missing or has an error in the code that makes the ignore function not display anything to allow the page to drop down to the newest post, when the "oldest" unread post that the link is trying to take you to in a thread does not exist on the displayed page.

Posts from ignored users haven't been visible at all on ENWorld for quite a while (and on some other VBulletin forums). Specifically, the old view of posts made by ignored users with the "This message is hidden because X is on your ignore list. " statement have been out of use for at least seven months, though they reappeared briefly during the recent upgrade process.

That having been explained, I think that you're the first person to report that the display option in question "doesn't automatically jump to the next post that comes after the one that is ignored" due to a missing marker (incidentally, the ignored post is still there, it just doesn't appear on your screen). I think that the previous post is right in that this is probably a VBulletin issue, not an ENWorld issue.

[Edit: Incidentally, I just tried to recreate the error that you mention and can't — my browser cheerfully takes me to the last post I haven't read when I click on the "View First Unread" button, skipping all non-visible, ignored, posts along the way.]

Curious I was taken to your post above right away; but when I ignored you, I was left at the top of the page. Now with you removed from the ignore, I was taken back to that post as proper.

Maybe it is an error in vBulletin having to do with mozilla CSS or something.

Well, I recall Michael Morris saying that he was trying to code everything for optimum performance in browsers other than IE, but I suppose it's possible that his vision and that of the VBulletin designers didn't dovetail as nicely as he had hoped.

Yeah that happens all the time with these types of forums. They are made to work one way, and don't like you to specialize them to your own tastes, and things break easily.

If that is the case, it is probably an easy fix, but just a little back-tracking by Morris to fix when time allows. Not really a high priority fix, but a little quirk I thought I would let someone know about.

Mozilla CSS likes to take its own fickle turns in code as well. At least ENWorld is taking steps for best cross-platform compatability.

So, in other words, the Ignore Poster Feature is working as advertised.

Easy solutiopn for your problem, don't use the Ignore List.
