Someone says "I'm quitting version 'x' of D&D" you react by:

[Sarcastic]I'll tell them why they're wrong and why the newest edition is teh sex and then get into an argument about why they are wrong to call me a fanboi and why older editions are crap and then get into an argument with other posters that...[/sarcastic]:erm:

Not.

Most times I read the post, sympathize with the OP to some degree and then move on. Sometimes I'll respond to the usual "Defenders of the newest edition's virginity", and try to achieve some sort of balance to the arguments that inevitably arise. However, having said that, this seems to happen a lot less often. The usual defenders have perhaps lost their fervour to defend it as voraciously as they once did. I think the edition wars on EN World have slowly receded to occasional and only mild skirmishes.

In the end put me down as a "Man, whatever, it's all D&D. You didn't enjoy it, go play what makes you happy" kind of guy.

I generally make sure not to even open and read that thread. I've seen it all before, and I'm not really sure why people bother to post it anyway.

I shrug, and wonder why they feel the need to announce it.

Regardless of what edition they play, they'll have an awesome! time, so it hardly matters what edition they play.

Very much quoted for truth. I puzzle over why people feel the need to announce their gaming comings and goings on a forum (except for recruitment/socialising sections).

Where's the "Support or ridicule their decision, depending upon which edition they've chosen to quit" option?

Seriously, none of my players have quit a game on me, so I mostly don't care. At least they're playing, which is better than defecting to MMOs.

Catharsis mainly I think. Or sometimes it's disappointment with a new rule set and that WotC has left them behind. Sometimes, I suppose it's anger... "Why the **** did they do this to my game". Essentially, there is a feeling of exclusion if you don't jive with the new rules. Posters are perhaps either looking for justification for their decision or just a few people that feel the same way or can sympathize with their decision.

In the end people can either read or even respond to these threads but they certainly don't have to. It is perhaps the people who shouldn't have responded to these threads but still did that caused most of the edition wars.

This.

Play and quit whatever you want, it doesn't really matter to me as long as your having fun.

This, too.

Really, I don't care what other people like or don't like very much.

Meh, who cares.

The only time it really matters is when you have to reach concensus within your own group. Beyond that it's all good.
