Janurary Editorial Calender

Wait, folks are complaining about new material for two popular races, long before we've even seen a description of the article? Seriously? No, I mean really, am I missing the joke here? Because, frankly, that's more stupid and childish than funny. These are two of my favorite races, currently! I'll take any new info about them!

As for "Dhampyr", is that what that is, a half-vampire? Well, okay. Is it a race or a monster, or maybe a monster manual-style race? I suppose I could handle an "undead-touched" character race in my game.... (Hmm... Winterhaven? Shadowfell Rift? This could work!)

EDIT: "Janurary" only has one 'r' in it. It's the one by the 'y'.

If you don't use either race in your campaign, and they've already run separate articles on each, isn't it reasonable to want something else? It's not like we are years into the magazines, and they need to repeat stuff.

So you're suggesting that we see an article about, say, Dwarves or Halflings, who haven't been "Dragon'd" yet? (IIRC.) That's fair, and I would like to see more things like that, too.

That said, I'm not picky. I like all kinds of new material, so long as it's interesting and reasonably balanced. Additionally, I do use Genasi and Warforged in my games, and I feel like additional material for them is a reward for me for doing so; I use the FRPG in my PoL campaign, and I use Warforged too.

That said, at this point, for all we know this article could be about how to use those races in other settings; perhaps this will be the article that will make you want to use them, Zaukrie.

Could be.*

That's not actually my biggest issue, the lack of number of articles is the biggest issue to me. I'd like more short articles, as that makes it more likely there is content I want to use.

***I use genasai in my world, I was speaking for the populace on this one, and the generic statement that I'd like more variety at this point in the lifecycle of the game, this article is just an example of what could be a specific problem. I'm sure the players in my world that use something else would like an article that applies to their character....

Dungeon was advertised as containing 3 adventures each month, that was not true in December - we got 2 plus a side trek (one of which is a conversion of a 3.5 adventure). There were great, great conversion articles the first month in Dungeon, virtually nothing like that since.
I like the side treks more than the adventures. I've been disappointed that they haven't had more of them.

I too like the sidetreks, and would love to see more plug and play stuff. But, I can mine adventures for some of those, and they clearly adverstise 3 adventures....

If I ran the world (at least this part):

Dungeon:
3 adventures, one for an adventure path, two on their own (or part of a short series, but not a lot of those as variety is important).
1-3 side treks
1-3 conversions of WotC printed adventures to other worlds, or adding side treks / more adventure
1 longer article on something for DMs primarily (like roll vs role is today, like the classic Hell's articles, or keeps, or whatever)
Columns to help DMs run their games

Dragon:
Every Issue:
1 long article on demons/devils/primordials and their cults (with support for play in all three tiers)
1 medium article on the game of some sort
1 short article on a race
1 short article on a class (actually, if I ran the world, we'd get separate columns on 5 classes each month, like the end of Paizo's Dragon run)
1 article tied to the adventure path, or to another adventure in Dragon

Rotating Issues (1-3 of these a month):
Article on minis/terrain/game play from the players perspective (this could happen quarterly or so)
Article on magic items
Article on monsters (maybe this should be in Dungeon)
Article on organizations/religions for PCs to join
Article tied to new books/releases that month (new feats, new weapons, whatever - could be column length)
Article on fun stuff (like confessions or alumni or other stuff related to D&D)

that's off the top of my head....

Despite the fact that I hate Dhampyrs, hate hate hate them, I'm looking forward to that article. These days, I like seeing new races about as much (or even a little more) as I like to see new classes, because I can geek out and make each class with the race, find synergies, etc.

That being said, once again, I can't wait for the Preview articles. Maybe I like being teased...

I'm rather satisfied with Dragon and Dungeon. The quality has been fabulous. I feel like my year subscription has payed for itself.

I do wish they had identified the Scales of War Adventure, or had been forthcoming if there isn't going to be one (like a break between Heroic and Paragon Tiers).

As for the calender, I'm not ready to discount DDI yet. I'll see how I feel in February. I'm growing concerned about the number of previews, but not alarmed yet.

I have less of a problem with Playtests, so long as they're really playtests and not previews missnamed.
