The Closed Eye (DM: Halford, Judge: garyh)

"This should be .... interesting. Palindrome, do your considerable talents include the more mundane skill of creating light? We may need some." Tander pauses. "Unless, of course, we fear alerting something below. But then again, we may need to see what it is we have alerted, if there is something there at all..."

[sblock=Light conditions and marching order]Is it pitch black down there? If so, I suppose we do need some light. If we close in on some voices we might want to go lights-out, though, to catch 'em by surprise.

Suggested marching looks good, though how about more of a block formation? Woe and Atreus in front, Tander and Palindrome in back, perhaps a little distance between pairs to not compromise potential sneakiness and not catch the whole party in area-affecting nastiness.

As soon as that ritual focus has been bagged, let's do like banana-desserts and split![/sblock]

Palindrome sticks his fingers in his ears, closes his eyes, and starts singing, "La-la-la-la-la!" while Atreus talks.

OOC: Which explains some of the crummy results on the Perception checks.

---

Palindrome joins the others as they open the trap door.

'Hey, look what I found!'

He holds out the small velvet pillow.

'I'm going to save it for my monkey.'

'Oh, and I found this,'
he says with much less enthusiasm, showing the jeweled eye to his teammates...and Atreus. 'It's like a magical focus for a ritual or some-- Ooooh! A hole in the ground!'

"Palindrome, do your considerable talents include the more mundane skill of creating light?"

'Absolutely! I just need Atreus to hold still while I pour some lamp oil on him.'

The mage backs towards the exit. 'But...uh...if we're going to leave this place, I have a couple of things of which I need to take care, before we go...'

And he's off!

[sblock=Palindrome's Excursion]Palindrome runs into the yard and cuts the toes off the archer and hamstrings him (so he can't run away).

Palindrome 'acquires' the 'raw materials' for a pair of 'elven boots' from the dead elven archer.[/sblock]

Short of breath, spattered in even more blood, Palindrome rushes back into the room. 'Does...*huff-huff*...anyone...*huff-huff*...know of...*huff-huff*...a good tanner...*huff*...around...*gulp*...here?'

He groans, holding a stitch in his side. 'Oh...*ugh*...light. *cough* Right.'

[OOC: Palindrome casts Light.]

A sphere of red light appears on the crown of Palindrome's hat.

[OOC: Red light doesn't mess up night vision.]

[sblock=Gear Check]Covaithe, did Palindrome get all of the items on his list? How many days of iron rations did he find? Thanks.[/sblock]

“Very subtle, P.” Woe nearly chuckles. “I’m sure the tanner could color your jacket to account for its new crimson-spotty look while he’s at it.”

Assuming no further hold-ups, Woe creeps down the staircase and peeks around the corner. If all he sees is a passage that continues for a while, he leads onwards and keeps well ahead of their light source, slipping from corner to corner as a shade with not the slightest sound to alert his presence.

[sblock=OOC]Smiley shield on back to prevent armor penalty; Natural 20 on Stealth! (that’s a 28 total!)[/sblock]

Atreus watches the jewel with somewhat interest but his attention is elsewhere.
" Nice jewel... ".

Atreus ignores Palindromes comment and continues to search the other rooms. After he is done searching he joins Woe down in the trap door. He starts to look at the floor to find any sign of tracks and how old the might be, then he follows Woe example, hiding from corner to corner.

Hide Check and Perception Check .
Question to Covaithe: Did I find anything else in the other rooms with my take 10?[/sblock]

[sblock=various ooc]If Palindrome's list consists of a bunch of toes and a fiew pieces of uncured elf-hide, then yes, he gets all of it. Were you going to take food from the kitchen? If so, I missed it, but... let's say he finds a 5 lb wheel of cheese, a 15 lb cured ham, three smoked sausages at 1 lb each, and up to 10 bundles of common herbs. If you feel like translating that into trail rations, I'd probably call it about 10 days worth, but don't bother on my account. I don't foresee any long journeys away from Daunton in this adventure. On the other hand, you never know...

There are no visible light sources down the stairs, though it would be hard to tell if there were lights around the corner at the bottom, since it is daylight.

If I understand right, it's Woe leading the way stealthily, with Atreus, Tander, and Palindrome following far enough behind that their light source doesn't mess up Woe's stealth? And when it's wide enough for two abreast, Woe and Atreus go together, possibly stealthily?

“Very subtle, P.” Woe nearly chuckles.

Palindrome grins. "Subtle is my middle name."

"Uh... If I had more than one name."

[sblock=Palindrome's Shopping List]
If Palindrome's list consists of a bunch of toes...

That's just sick. Shame on you!

Wait.

Maybe he could make some dice from the big toes...

[sblock=About those dice...]They should be magical--like rolling natural 7's and 11's all over the place.[/sblock]

...and a fiew pieces of uncured elf-hide...
Check!

Daddy needs a new pair of shoes!

(See! It's doubly funny because it goes with the toe-dice and the intended purpose of the hide.)

...5 lb wheel of cheese...
Check!

...a 15 lb cured ham...
Check!

I'd like one of those in real life.

...three smoked sausages at 1 lb each....
Check!

....and up to 10 bundles of common herbs.
Check!

If you feel like translating that into trail rations, I'd probably call it about 10 days worth, but don't bother on my account. I don't foresee any long journeys away from Daunton in this adventure. On the other hand, you never know...
Yep. Besides, carrying tons of possibly useless crud is the entire purpose of the Bag of Holding. It's 'raisin detriment' so to speak.

All the stuff I wanted my boy to take was listed in this post: Here.[/sblock]

'I've got a 10-feet long pole if anyone wants to borrow it.'

'The Big Book of Adventuring says that you should never walk into an underground passageway without probing the ground ahead of you for pit traps, green slime, deadly mold, tripwires...'
Palindrome drones on for a while. The list is rather long.

[sblock=Formation and Tracking] I was thinking, if there are any recent tracks down at the bottom of the stairs, wouldn't it be better if Atreus took the lead, so that he could track them?[/sblock]
