WotC Discontinues Minis: How Much Does It Affect You?

How much does the discontinuation of D&D Minis affect you/your game?

Pretty self-explanatory title, really. How much does the recent news about Wizards of the Coast discontinuing their miniatures line affect you and/or your game?

For me, it doesn't affect me or my game at all. In all my years of gaming, I've only used metal, unpainted minis for the characters, and homemade tokens for the monsters and NPCs. It wasn't my agenda; I've always thought that the D&D Minis were a nice product. I had just gotten into the habit of making my own gaming pieces out of foam core. I think I only own six, maybe seven of the D&D Minis.

I doubt we even notice.

Somewhat.

I have an army of minis and do not buy the random packs. I still purchased singles from resale sites and always looked forward to new minis to fill my gaps.

Of course, the collector sets like the beholder box might prove to be exactly what I want. Who knows?

Proper poll options not available, as I thought they already ended the line long ago after the player packs or whatever that first came out for 4th.

So it won't affect me at all. Just checked my old ones I had repainted and none of them have melted, beyond the ones that got modded of course, so like my 500+ pewter/lead/[insert other metal used here] minis I expect I have enough.

There are lots of other places to get minis, and much cheaper.

It affects me the most in the group- I'm virtually the sole minis buyer/provider, and there were some things that were simply only showing up in the DDM line.

But I'll live.

Barely. My mini collection (close to 2,000) already covers pretty much everything we need. The only difference is that now there won't be a once-per-year time when I go looking for excuses to make PCs fight the monsters I just got awesome new minis for.

My game will not really suffer for it, however I am disappointed that there are some critters I won't have matching minis for. We have always had to substitute something now and then so not a major negative. I think I have one or two cases of every set exept for Harbinger where I was late to the party so to speak.:p

After years and years of minis, does anybody who seriously was using and collecting minis for gaming really not have enough to run?

Okay, so you don't have the exact mini for an Ethereal Dire RavageSpike PeopleDevourer or a Fiendish DonkeyHorse, but I think you'll probably have enough to have a reasonable proxy.

For me, the answer is it will have zero effect. Then again, I bought few D&D minis. I use minis at the table, but before the D&D minis were released I had pieced together minis from the old Hero Quest boardgame, Mage Knight, and some pewter minis and childrens toys to have plenty of minis for the games I want to run.

No biggie. If one thing the DDM line taught me is that no matter how many minis you have, you're never going to have exactly the right one for every encounter, nor are you always going to have enough of them even if you do have the right one. Same goes for tokens I think, although they're at least a little more cost effective.

Frankly it cost me somewhere around 300-400 bucks in bought DDM minis to realize I should have simply invested about 5 bucks in a few dollar store packs of chess pieces.

If the game was moving away from using them (assuming the use of them anyway), it might cause me to buy more of them as they become cheaper and wind up on ebay and at other auctions. But, I have plenty enough minis (DDM and mostly otherwise) to last a lifetime and cover most situations, including large armies.
