Which game would you recommend?

My group has been playing 4e dnd. It's too much like a skirmish game for us. It's like hero clix with too many rules. We like the character customization a whole bunch.

I'll go against the current on this one. If you like character customization, go ahead and give Pathfinder a try. Besides the Core and the APG, there are a lot of good 3pp PFRPG books out there with character options. While Paizo having great customer relations and a fantastic bench of writers are very big selling points for the PFRPG, do not overlook the fact that it is OGL and is getting a lot of 3pp support which allows you to take your game in all sorts of directions.

I really depends on the type of game your looking for.

For Fantasy I'd say Pathfinder (assuming you liked 3E). If that system isn't your preference I strongly recommend Savage Worlds based in either Hellfrost or Soloman Kane. Both are outstanding, with Hellfrost having the better support and more of a fantasy RPG feel thatn Soloman Kane.

I don't disagree with you but I will say that one doesn't need any of the supplements to run a perfectly good fantasy game using Savage Worlds. I picked up the Fantasy Companion and it's a great book. But even that isn't a requirement.

Which game would you recommend?

3.5 dnd, pathfinder, rogue trader, warhammer fantasy 2e, or that savage adventures thing...

Thank you everybody in advance.

We're basically looking for a game that's not based solely on combat (4e) and that's not looking up rules every five minutes (dnd 2e)

If you're against too many rules, I'd recommend against 3.X (including pathfinder) on the grounds that there are more rules around. And if you want a game that's not largely based round combat, D&D may not be for you. Savage Worlds and Mouse Guard would seem to be in the area you're looking, I think. (Warhammer Fantasy Roleplay (pre 3e) is a specific taste where you areally are playing the inhabitants of a wretched hive of scum and villainy).

If you want customisation coming out of your ears, there's GURPS. (IMO it's best to always play GURPS as if you were playing GURPS Lite - just eyeball difficulties and ignore the vehicle rules).

It depends upon what you want out of your rpg experience. If you're really looking for a more rpg like game with lite rules then a game that doesn't have much will suffice, but it would rule out 3.5, pathfinder, etc. If you're just not into 4e because of the tactical considerations, then you'll need a game where miniatures or other props are not part of the system. Savage Worlds and FATE falls into this category I believe.

However, if you're really into character customization and don't care about crunch, then a toolkit rpg is probably up for you like Herosystem or GURPS in which you can create a bajillion things. All of these games have their inherent strengths and weaknesses and pretty much all of them are good depending upon what you're looking for.

Of course, as Pathfinder fan, I'll just plug in my game of choice here. ;)

You could give Legends of Anglerre a try, it's based in the FATE system. Very few rules, a lot of customization for characters and a lot of power for the GM and the players at the same time to craft a great story.

I agree with the majority of this post. It sounds as though you'd benefit from looking outside of D&D... though I'll say that I'd also consider that to mean looking outside of Pathfinder as well.

Below are links to some free samples of the games mentioned:

Another potentially low-combat, simple rules system is HeroQuest. Characters are highly customisable, although there is no "minigame" of building characters - it's not as if the customisation makes your character stronger or weaker in the game.

HeroQuest does need a GM whose good at kicking things off with compelling situations, and whose good at adjudicating the outcomes of PC actions on the fly. A GM who ran good skill challenges in 4e would probably be a good HeroQuest GM,

It depends on if your group liked 3.x then I'd say Pathfinder is great. Otherwise Savage worlds? Castle and Crusades is good too. But that's closer to 3.x than another system.
