Delete me

Somehow, the man in the mirror was still smiling.
It was an evil little smile, the kind of smile you'd want your dog to wear when facing a burglar.
The mirror smiled, but he didn't. It was just a rictus he'd received in the war.
He could feel himself frowning, but the expression in the mirror didn't change.
The war.
Just thinking about it made him shiver.
It had all started so innocently.
"Delete me", the legend had said.
It had spread. Electronically, by word of mouth, by carrier hawk.
When they tried applying topic to where no topic could thrive it got out of control. Bad.
"I delete, therefore I think." The words had appeared out of nothing, posted by no one.
That's what the thread had said.
And then, madness.
He couldn't even remember what the smile had come from. He'd been laughing maniacally at something indescribably funny one moment, and the next the trench had been filled with spam.
They'd needed all the ink and photons just to stem the tide.
