I am kinda confused about multiclassing in 4e , as far as i understand it is only done with multiclass feats.

So i can only choose to multiclass when i gain a feat ?
ANd lets say i am a cleric and got barbarian for multiclass.
What happanes when i lvl ? Which ones HP i am going to use when i get a new lvl ?
Which ones powers i can use ? Or i can only use the power that is mentioned in the multi class feats ?

Total mess :(

Thanks in advance.

Multiclassing by means of feats is still being a member of your original class but dabbling in something else. You can't change your base class and approach to the world. You still get cleric hp and cleric powers.

(If you want half and half, there are hybrid rules - I neither recommend nor allow them).

When you take a multiclass feat, you only get the powers and attributes associated with that feat. So when you level up, you don't change anything - you just level up in your main class as you normally would.

Basically, successive feats allow you to swap out your core class powers with those from your chosen multiclass. When you get to level 11 you can also choose to paragon multiclass instead of picking a paragon path, which allows you to swap more.

If you're looking for a more traditional form of multiclassing, you should build a "hybrid" character (an option that appeared first in the PHB3). This allows you to share the benefits of two classes in more overt manner.

Hybrids are cool. Most of my recent PCs have been hybrids. They have down sides to be sure, but the right combinations can rock. ;)

Agreed. I've been practically begging some of my players to try out some hybrid combos, but they just don't seem particularly interested in them.

We are in the middle of a bit of a break, so one of them offered to run an interim game. One of the players finally decided to give it a go, and is having a ton of fun playing a rogue/warlock hybrid. I think it's getting the others warmed up to the idea a bit, too.

OP, definitely look into hybrids if you want to multiclass. You may not like it, but I'd at least give it a shot.

You can only multiclass when you gain a feat, or you can retrain a feat you already have into a multiclass feat.

You can only choose the multiclass feat for one class, unless you are a bard.

Once you choose the multiclass feat, you gain only the benefits listed on the feat (for instance, if you MC as a wizard you gain training in Arcana, proficiency in wizard implements and the use of a wizard at-will as an encounter power).

Multiclassing doesn't change your hp or anything else.

You can take the power-swap feats to trade powers from your class for powers from your multiclass. There is one for encounter, one for utilities and one for dailies.

Instead of taking a paragon path, you can choose paragon multiclassing to gain further powers from your multiclass.

The thing to be aware of with hybrids, it's like KarinsDad pointed out, with the right combinations, they can rock. It's pretty easy to build a useless stinker of a character if you don't know what you're doing, then be left wondering, "why does my character suck?"

The other side to them is that if you do it well, you can create characters that are better in every meaningful way than "stock" characters.

I like that they are an option though.

One more benefit of multiclass feats:

You count as a member of the class for purposes of meeting prerequisites for other feats and paragon paths. (I've seen players pick up multiclass feats for both these reasons).
