Pathfinder 1E Pathfinder Online MMORPG Announced

One thing I would love to see in a MMO is the ability to "stake a bit of land".

What I mean by this is the ability to create an area within the world (accessible by teleport?) where the land owner can design the land/dungeon/city and place custom quests and adventures.

Think Mindcraft / Neverwinter based in pathfinder.

I am sure they could charge for the ability to host your own area and it would be profitable..

You guys need to read the FAQ as it gives some insight into what they would like to do with the game. For instance, they plan to use a free-to-play model, so it's inexpensive to get in to. Also, they are not using classes and levels, but archetypes and skill advances that unlock class abilities (like leveling but seems more organic).

Check it out, it really is interesting. https://goblinworks.com/faq/

I want...

This is my chance to have a voice in this MMO's development!!

I want strict adherence to the PFRPG rules. I want official modules to be added as content. I want it to come on a single disc, that works in my PS3, XBOX360, and PC. If I pre-order, on the release date I want hot RPG girls to rappel out of a helicopter and deliver the golden disc directly into my greasy claws.

And, I want it to cost no more than $29.95... with no monthly fees. And I want tons of new monthly content. And I want it before this Christmas.

Get it done, Goblinworks!

Judging by the vibe I get from the FAQ, I'm guessing this will be a map-based game using lots of pop-up widgets for combat, settlement management, etc - rather than a full-blown 3D WoW extravaganza.

Which could be all kinds of fun, and possibly quite popular if it's pretty enough.

My thinking is simple. They are planning a sandbox MMO. Has there been a sandbox MMO more popular than Star Wars Galaxies? I don't believe so. SWG was badly mismanaged, but the MMO market has shown sandbox style MMOs to be drastically less popular than them park style. For those who aren't familiar w/the terms, sandbox is an open world, not really quest driven, more things up to the players to make their own fun. Theme park refers to an MMO that is highly quest driven, lots of planned activities built into the game, etc. World of Warcraft, Star Wars: The Old Republic, Everquest, those are all theme park MMOs. Star Wars Galaxies is the best example that I'm the most familiar with as I played that for a few years.

I wish them luck, but I don't have much in the way of expectations. This has nothing to do w/my opinions on Pathfinder as an RPG itself.

Wow you wasted your first post on unrealistic sarcasm? I'd say welcome to ENWorld, but you've been lurking for 2 years already :)

WOW had Blizzard as the makers, and Blizzard is highly respected in the video game world. KOTR has Star Wars...which gives it huge draw right there. Paizo has neither going for it.
Old Republic also has BioWare, don't forget. It's not just the IP, it's also a very experienced and respected game designer studio.

Not necessarily. There's an alternative: use the Guild Wars model. It was limited to 20 levels from the start (and you could even start at level 20 if you wanted) and they sticked to it.
Guild Wars hasn't exactly set the MMO world on fire. (I say that without malice -- I've got a friend who's a developer, and wish them all the best with the sequel.) Aiming for "profitable, but just barely" is a pretty bad way to attract investors. They'll need more than 100 of their minimum $100k buy-in investors to get this off the ground.

Judging by Paizo's description what they're trying to do is not really similar to WoW. Note that they're comparing it with a 'theme-park'.
Compare it to what Horizons offered (and I guess, in some fashion, the current owners' version of the game offers). From what we know, it's not a radical departure from existing MMOs.

Ultima Online says hello. City of Heroes/City of Villains also offers the ability to create playable missions.
